Charles L. Akin, died Sunday, April 28, 2013 at Savannah Square. He was born July 20, 1928 in Ashburn, GA to the late Arthur Virlyn and Jewell Dee Rouse Akin. While in Ashubrn, as a teenager, he obtained the Boy Scout rank of Eagle Scout.
He graduated from Ashburn High School and from Georgia Tech with a Ceramic Engineering degree. He obtained an MBA at Augusta College in Augusta, GA. While living in Augusta, GA and North Augusta, SC he was active in the American Institute of Industrial Engineers, the Boy Scouts of America, the North Augusta Grace United Methodist Church, the North Augusta Lions Club, and the North Augusta Optimist Club.
His career included engineering positions with: O. Hommel Co., in Pittsburgh; PA; Lockheed Aircraft Co. in Marietta, GA; Naval Boiler & Turbine Laboratory in Philadelphia, PA; and Babcock & Wilcox in Augusta, GA from which he retired after 30 years of service.
He and his wife lived in North Augusta for 40 years before moving to Savannah in 2002, and then became members of Isle of Hope United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents and four siblings, he was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years, Cibl Hall Akin.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Robert Charles Bob and Teresa Teri Akin, two grandsons, Jeremy Hall Akin, and Marshall Bailey Akin, all of Savannah, and a brother, Thomas A. Akin, of Smyrna, GA, along with several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service to honor his life will be 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 4, 2013 at Isle of Hope United Methodist Church.
Remembrances may be made to the Isle of Hope United Methodist Church Missions Fund.
